Most people pass through Surat Thani at four in the morning on the way to a boat, which is a pity and also entirely reasonable. It is the gateway to the Gulf islands, and it is also the way into Khao Sok — a rainforest older than the Amazon with a flooded lake and limestone that rivals anything on the coast.

Touch & Go
Most people pass through Surat at four in the morning on the way to a boat. One night turns that into a night’s sleep and a proper meal.
Day 1
Land, and eat by the river
URT is half an hour out. The night market on the Tapi is a working market rather than a tourist one, and it is the best thing in town.
Day 2
Onward
Straight to a pier for Samui and Phangan, or two hours inland to Khao Sok. Surat is a hinge, and it is honest about it.
We would not build a holiday around one night in Surat. We would build one around not arriving at a pier at dawn having slept on a bus.

Two nights makes the rainforest possible, which is the only reason to give Surat Thani more than a stopover.

Arrive, the night market
In from URT, dinner on the river, and an early start booked for the morning.
Day 2
Into Khao Sok
Two hours inland to a rainforest older than the Amazon, with limestone karsts standing straight out of it. The jungle walk in the afternoon.
Day 3
Cheow Lan Lake, then the coast
Longtail out among the karsts, the floating raft houses, and back down to a pier or the airport in the evening.
Khao Sok is two hours from Surat and a raft house night is the reason to go. Two nights makes that possible; one does not.

Destination Deep Dive
The lake at dawn is the whole trip. Everything in this shape exists to put you on the water before the mist clears.
Day 1
Arrive, the night market
In from URT and a night in town.
Day 2
Khao Sok village
The jungle walk, the bamboo raft on the Sok river, and the evening chorus, which is louder than anyone expects.
Day 3
Cheow Lan Lake
Longtail out through the karsts to a raft house tied to the cliff. Swim off the deck; there is nowhere to walk to.
Day 4
The lake at first light
Gibbons and hornbills before the heat, then the Coral Cave or the Nam Talu river cave, and back to the pier.
Day 5
Out to the coast
Chaiya and the old Srivijaya chedi on the way, or straight to the ferry for Samui.
Raft houses have no air conditioning and often no mains power after ten at night. That is the experience rather than a shortcoming, and we say it plainly so nobody arrives expecting a resort.

When this starts India was moved to this 30-day exemption by the Thai Cabinet on 16 July 2026. It commences 15 days after the Ministry of Interior announcements are published in Thailand’s Royal Gazette. We confirm in writing which rule applies to your travel dates before you fly, and we will not let you travel on the wrong one.
Every traveller must also file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours of arrival. It is free, and airlines check it at the gate — without it you will not be allowed to board.

Do not book the 4am connection if you can help it
The classic overnight-bus-to-dawn-ferry combination is cheap and miserable. A night in town costs little and starts the island properly.
Khao Sok deserves two nights
A day trip means four hours in a van to see the lake for ninety minutes. The raft houses are the point.
Two piers, both called Surat Thani
Donsak is 90 minutes from the town and most car ferries leave from there. Confirm which one your ticket means.
October to December is genuinely wet
This coast floods. Build slack into any tight connection in those months.
