The gateway to Isaan, the north-eastern third of Thailand that most visitors never see. Udon is a working provincial city with an excellent food scene, a bronze-age site older than anything in Europe, and — for about eight weeks a year — a lake that turns entirely pink.

Burning season. Agricultural smoke fills the valleys and air quality is among the worst in the world for weeks at a time. Views disappear and it is genuinely unpleasant for anyone with a chest complaint. We will say so rather than sell you the month.

  1. Day 1

    Land, and eat

    UTH is ten minutes out. The night market, and Isaan food where it comes from — som tam, laap, sticky rice, grilled chicken over charcoal.

  2. Day 2

    The lake or the graves

    Red Lotus Lake at dawn if the season is right, Ban Chiang and its bronze-age burials if it is not. Out in the afternoon.

Red Lotus Lake flowers roughly December to February, and only in the morning. Outside those weeks it is a lake, and we will not sell it to you in June.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive, the night market

    In from UTH, and dinner at whichever stall has the longest local queue.

  2. Day 2

    Red Lotus Lake and Ban Chiang

    The lake at first light, then a UNESCO site older than anything in Europe, with almost nobody at it.

  3. Day 3

    Nong Khai and the Mekong

    An hour north to the river: the sculpture park at Sala Kaew Ku, the Friendship Bridge, and Laos on the far bank. Out in the evening.

Isaan sees very few foreign visitors, which is both the appeal and the difficulty. English is thin on the ground here, so we put a guide with you rather than a phrasebook.

    Arrive, the night market

    A first evening in town.

  2. Day 2

    The lake, then Ban Chiang

    Red Lotus at dawn in season, and the bronze-age site in the afternoon heat, which is mostly indoors.

  3. Day 3

    Nong Khai

    Sala Kaew Ku’s concrete sculpture park, the riverside market, and the Mekong at sunset from the promenade.

  4. Day 4

    Phu Phra Bat and the skywalk

    Prehistoric rock shelters turned into Buddhist shrines, then Wat Pha Tak Sua’s glass skywalk out over the river valley.

  5. Day 5

    A slow last day

    The Naga Cave at Phu Langka if you have the legs for the climb, or lunch in town and an afternoon flight from UTH.

Nong Khai is an hour from Udon; Phu Langka is three. This shape has a car and a driver in it throughout, because the alternative is a day lost to buses.

  • Red Lotus Lake

    From December to February, Nong Han fills with pink water lilies from horizon to horizon. Boats go out at dawn, which is the only time worth going.

What we would tell you on the phone.

  • The lotus lake is a season, not a sight

    Outside December to February it is an ordinary lake. Do not build a trip around it in June.

  • Very little English

    This is not a tourist city and that is its charm, but a guide or a translation app makes a real difference.

  • Isaan food is properly hot

    “Not spicy” here still means spicy. Say it twice and expect to be tested.

  • The Laos border is an hour away

    Nong Khai and the Friendship Bridge make Vientiane a straightforward add-on, but check your visa position first.
